The energy consumption of ceramic industry is mainly concentrated in the firing part, which is about 50% of the total energy consumption. Therefore, if the firing temperature is reduced by about 100 ℃, the total energy consumption can be reduced by 10-15%, and the emission of CO2 and other waste gas can be greatly reduced. Its economic and social benefits are very significant, which is an important technical demand and power for the sustainable development of ceramic industry. Adding a certain amount of wollastonite in ceramic production can significantly reduce the firing temperature and the production cost of ceramic enterprises.

Wollastonite is a rare mineral resource and a natural non-metallic material with fibrous (needle) structure in nature. It has good and stable physical and chemical properties, high whiteness, acid and alkaline resistance, non-toxic and environmental protection characteristics, and is an ideal industrial raw material. Because wollastonite itself does not contain organic matter and binding water, its drying shrinkage and firing shrinkage are very small, and its coefficient of thermal expansion is low (6.7 × 10-6), so it is suitable for rapid firing. After firing, the needle like wollastonite crystals in the ceramic body are arranged in a network, which improves the mechanical strength of the products. Meanwhile, the glass phase with more alkaline earth metal oxides is formed, and its moisture absorption expansion is also small. Wollastonite can provide ceramic body and glaze, enamel and frit with some excellent properties, such as low coefficient of thermal expansion, reduction of drying and firing shrinkage, enhancement of post burn strength, improvement of thermal shock resistance, easy compression, better adhesion, and better electrical properties. It is widely used in tile, sanitary ceramics, tableware, refractory and art ceramics.
